Shima Art Company


Shima Art Company (New York) sold "shin hanga" prints which were printed in Tokyo.


Description Round red seal, with top portion being the backside of a "baren" (round printing tool) seen over Mt. Fuji below.
Location New York/Tokyo
Time Period 1908 to ca1939/40. Learn more about Shima Art Company at Shotei.com.
Artists Served Bairei, Keinan, and Takahashi Hiroaki (Shotei). Also produced many "ukiyoe reproductions" of artists including Hiroshige, Eisen, Hokusai, and others.


Shobisha


Shobisha, founded in the 1920s, is still active today in Tokyo under the name Nakajima Shobisha, but meanwhile only as a print dealer, not publisher. Around 1950 Shobisha acquired from Kawaguchi 15 sets of Hasui blocks and continues still to reprint these designs.


Description The seal is a sophisticated "Shobisha" in Kanji characters. This seal was used in the period 1950-1960 approx. later Hasui reprints do not show this seal.

Uchida Han


Uchida Han (or Uchida Publishing) was founded in Kyoto in 1919, and operates still today as an active publisher of shin-hanga in addition to publishing re-strikes of older ukiyo-e prints.


Description These examples of Uchida's various seals all read "Uchi-da Han," meaning "Uchida Publishing."

Time Period 1919 until present
Artists Served Tokuriki, Kotozuka, Sadanobu, Ito, and others; as well as numerous re-strikes of Hiroshige and other ukiyo-e artists.
