The above 40 images are all "early/vintage" Hasui prints that are now very pleased to offer for "private sale" as consignments from the family of a US Navy servicewoman (Verna Woodrich) who was stationed in Yokohama / Tokyo during 1947 under McArthur's forces which occupied Japan after the War. These above 40 "early / vintage" Hasui prints are of a larger consignment totaling 60 prints.

VERNA WOODRICH

Verna Woodrich was born in Sumter, Minnesota in 1923. She enlisted in May, 1945, and after basic training in Brooklyn, New York, and Hospital Corps School in Illinois, she made her way to Japan where she served as part of WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) in the U.S. Navy.

She was stationed in Yokohama, and worked in the Hospital Corps and also did office work for a General named Payton. There they looked after GIs who had recently returned from fighting in the South Pacific. She remained in Japan for a full year. Outside of her duties, she and her friends were able to do sightseeing and visit Tokyo, and they even climbed Mt. Fujiyama - which they did at night to avoid the heat!!

Along with a collection of almost 100 woodblock prints she also collected many Japanese souvenirs and crafts, including puzzle boxes, toys, fabric, vases, and an assortment of other interesting artifacts. Upon returning to the U.S., she attended the University of Minnesota School of Nursing where she graduated in 1953. She died in February 2018 at age 93.

40 HASUI PRINTS

OK -- Here's consignor SF's 02 thru 37 Hasui prints -- all prints are "Verna's Military Collection, Tokyo 1947" -- All pristine, never displayed. This 1947 Tokyo collection of 36 "early/vintage" Hasui prints (all Watanabe) includes: 10 prints = "unsealed"

7 prints = "6-mm"

3 prints = "M-seal" ("gift")

3 prints = "G-seal" (rare -- one very serious Hasui collector we know owns none bearing this seal)

5 prints = "D-seal"

7 prints = "C-seal"

1 prints = "B-seal"

A very nice mix -- 40 prints....of which 8 are "First Edition" prints.

All prints have been in "flat storage" for the past 71 years (since 1947) -- and ALL were collected during 1947 while serving in occupied Japan under General McArthur.

Several of these prints bear the appropriate seals of "First Edition" prints. ALL prints date to pre-1947, hence ALL are "life-time" printings.

VERY UNIQUE to this group of "early/vintage" Hasui prints are four smaller Hasui prints that we've NEVER before seen.

In all the 20+ years that we've been buying/selling many hundreds of Hasui's prints, we've never previously seen "Korean Temple" print "indicated" above in the top row. Hence -- these 4 prints will prove to be very collectable in our opinion.
